Easy Steps to Paint Skirting Boards
Regardless of the type of room or its size, painting skirting boards is a fast way to make any room feel larger and more specific than before. Below are steps you may follow to achieve good results when painting the skirting, even if this is your first time!
1. Choose your colour
Choose a skirting colour that is in keeping with the walls. Darker painted skirting can look very modern; whilst lighter painted skirting can give feeling of height and space in small rooms. Amongst all painted skirting it is hard to go wrong with the look of white.
2. Choose a Brush
A self-priming paint, or water-based paint, will require a 2-inch (5cm) brush at the most. Use synthetic bristles when considering a water-based paint.
3. Prepare the surface
Lightly sand the skirting surface as this will create a nice texture for added adhesion of the paint. Use the brush to sweep off the dust. If your skirting is dirty or chipped, consider a light wash down using soapy water or a sugar soap.
4. Protect the edges
Apply masking tape along the floor edges to get clean lines. If you have carpet, press the tape down with a blunt tool to stop paint from seeping underneath.
5. Start painting
Dip your brush about halfway into the paint, and remove the excess on the side of the paint tin. Make sure the first thing you paint is the top edge of the skirting board. Now you can also work in sections of about 1 metre long, but finish the paint area with a smooth stroke down the length of the skirting board.
6. Apply a second coat
Let the first coat dry completely—check the paint tin for timings—before adding the second. No need to sand between coats.
7. Take off the tape
Once the paint has dried, you can peel the tape away gently. If it was on carpet, press the edge of the tape prior to removal to break the seal.
