The Art of Forecasting Colour Trends
Each year, Dulux selects a Colour of the Year that captures the mood and trends of the coming year. For example, the 2013 Colour of the Year, Inspired Violet, is a bold hue symbolizing wisdom and honesty. With its dual character, it offers a tranquil yet rich and dazzling quality.
This choice isn’t made on a whim. Dulux has a team of dedicated colour forecasters who spend weeks deciding on the perfect shade. The process begins each September when design experts from various fields—interior, fashion, product, and architecture—collaborate to discuss trends for the next 18 months.
After identifying key trends, a global team of senior colour experts refines these ideas over three days, narrowing them into a dominant trend, five supporting stories, colour palettes, and the Colour of the Year.
A key concept during these discussions is the "Zeitgeist effect," which reflects the collective mood and shared design themes of the moment. By capturing this essence, Dulux’s experts ensure their forecasts resonate with current global sentiments.
To solidify their ideas, the team creates mood boards—a visual storytelling tool that distills concepts into impactful imagery. "An image says a thousand words," explains Heleen van Gent, head forecaster. These boards guide the photography process, helping stylists and photographers bring each trend to life in diverse and fresh ways.
After visualizing the trends, the team articulates their qualities and meanings to ensure they connect with audiences worldwide. Explore the results and share your thoughts at www.colourfutures.com.
