How to clean your walls before painting

Follow these cleaning instructions to prepare your walls for painting.

1. Dust down

In order to guarantee that your paintbrush and paint stay clean and free of debris as you apply the paint, start by using a cleaning brush or cloth to remove any cobwebs, dust, and loose dirt.

2. Remove any mould

Making sure that your property is well aired is a smart idea because mould can grow in moist, enclosed spaces. Spray fungicidal solution or mould killer on the wall to get rid of any visible mould. You can get this at most hardware and grocery stores. Follow the instructions on the container for the best results.

3. Remove old paper and paint

If you plan to paint a shiny wall surface matte, you should lightly sand it down with a fine-grade sandpaper beforehand. We advise using a wallpaper remover to get rid of the wallpaper because it has a "digester" that softens and loosens the glue. It prevents any glue that might still be present from later fading the paint.

4. Clean the walls.

After removing any old paint or wallpaper, wash the surfaces you intend to paint with hot water and diluted liquid detergent. Since there can be grease on the walls if you're painting the kitchen, try using a little stronger liquid detergent solution. Before painting, make sure to properly dry the walls and rinse out any leftovers with clean water.
